논평: 손봉호 박사
바이어하우스 교수의 발표는 성경을 하나님 말씀으로 믿는 보수 기독교인이 이라크 전쟁과 같이 복잡한 문제에 대해서 얼마나 공정하고 분명하며 균형이 잡힌 분석과 판단을 내릴 수 있는가를 잘 보여 주었습니다. 성경적으로 철저히 보수적인 기독교인도 매우 현실적이고 설득력이 있음을 잘 증명해 준 것입니다. 스스로 거듭난 기독교인이라고 주장하는 또 한 사람의 보수주의자가 엄청난 실수를 저질러 현재와 미래에 수많은 사람에게 큰 고통을 가하기 때문에 바이어하우스 박사의 발표가 더 참신하게 느껴집니다. 부쉬 대통령은 전 세계 인구의 절대 다수를 설득시키는데 실패했으며, 미국의 지성인들도 설득시키지 못했습니다. 연합군이 전쟁에 이기고 훗세인의 축출을 이라크 인들이 기뻐한다는 사실도 전쟁의 부정적인 성격을 바꾸지 못합니다. 일반 시민들이 당한 고통과 물질적인 손해는 무엇으로도 보상 받을 수 없으며 정당화될 수 없습니다. 아직까지도 대량 살상무기를 발견하지 못했다는 사실은 미국의 전쟁 이유근거가 얼마나 약한가를 보여주고 대량파괴에 숨은 동기가 있음을 폭로하고 있습니다.
이 전쟁은 11, 12, 13세기의 십자군 전쟁과 같이 기독교 국가들이 저지른 또 하나의 부끄러운 원정으로 역사에 기록되지 않을까 걱정됩니다. 이로 말미암아 미국은 민주주의 보루란 도덕적 권위를 상실했으며 자유의 이름으로 전쟁을 시작했으나, 그 자유의 가치를 떨어뜨리고 말았습니다. 바이어하우스 교수가 시사하듯, 이 전쟁의 또 하나의 심각한 결과는 모슬렘 국가들 뿐 아니라 세계 전체에 기독교 선교가 큰 손상을 입는다는 것입니다. 부쉬 대통령과 그 지지자들은 스스로를 좋은 기독교인이라고 주장하지 말았으면 합니다. 거듭난 기독교인이라 하여 모든 문제에 대해서 올바르게 판단하는 것이 아님을 그들의 경우가 잘 증명해 주었습니다. 이것은 특히 정치적인 문제를 판단할 때 조심하고 겸손해야 한다는 좋은 교훈이기도 합니다.
지금 우리에게 당면한 문제는 이 전쟁의 부정적인 영향을 최소화하는 것입니다. 한국 복음주의협회는 한국 그리스도인들은 결코 연합군 편을 드는 것이 아니라는 사실을 이슬람 국민들에게 알리는 것이 좋을 것 같습니다. 그리고 이라크의 재건을 돕는데 우리의 모든 노력을 집결해야 하겠습니다. 적어도 이 일에는 우리가 다른 어느 단체들보다 활발하게 활동하고 더 많은 것을 희생할 수 있어야 할 것입니다.

A Comment on "War and Peace in Christian Perspective" by Dr. Peter Beyerhaus
It is a great relief to see a Bible-believing conservative Christian provides such a balanced, fair, and clear analysis and critical assessment of a complex event as the present war in Iraq. He has shown that a thoroughly Biblical standpoint can be very realistic and persuasive as well. Biblically conservative do not need to be politically conservative as well. Professor Beyerahus' paper is especially refreshing because another conservative who professes himself to be a born-again Christian has made a blunder of world scale which harms so many people not only today but more in the future. Bush's justification of the war has failed to persuade the majority of world population including many intellectuals in America itself. The fact that the Allied Force has won the battle and the Iraq people are jubilant over the expulsion of Hussein does not change the negative character of the war. The unnecessary sufferings of innocent civilians and material damage it has caused are beyond any compensation and justification. The fact that the Allied Force has so far failed to find any weapons of mass destruction shows the weakness of American justification and exposes an ulterior motive hidden behind the mass destruction.
I am afraid this war may be recorded in history as another shameful enterprise of Christian nations as the Crusade of the 11th-13th centuries. It has deprived America of its moral authority as a bulwark of democracy and has devaluated freedom in the name of which it has fought the war. Another serious repercussion with which we are presently concerned is, as Dr. Beyerhaus clearly suggests, the damage it will afflict upon Christian mission not only among Moslems but in other parts of the world also. I sincerely wish that Bush and his cohort stop claiming that they are good Christians. They have proved very plainly that being born-again does not guarantee right judgments on all affairs. It should make us Christians more careful and humble in our decisions and judgments especially in political matters.
Our task at the moment is to reduce the negative affects of the war as much as possible. Korean Evangelical Fellowship may express our critical view of the war to show to the people in Islamic world that Korean Christians are very definitely not on the side of the Allied Force. We also should pour all our efforts to help the war-ridden Iraq to recover and rebuild itself. In this matter, at least, we should be more active and sacrificial than any other group in our society.
